Wonder Women
Everytime you see me, you know I am full of stuffs. My 'thinking' face and squinting eyes does show clearly I am nothing but a lady filled with things to do. Ample. I am damn tired. But I try. I try to make time for everything I love - friends, colleagues, my fav TV dramas, run, swim, Olympics, etc. which makes me one superhero.
** I am into Park since Beijing 2008. See previous post.
I also got myself a property after searching for the looongest time. I bought this condo on impulse. Well, it's primarily bought for investment, and the location is great, so WHATEVER! But looking at the huge awesome swimming pool, I think I might 'merasmikan' it with several bouts of freestyle, butterfly, back and breast, and pee in it, before I tenant it out. (I think I bought this place only because of the pool).
Not that I am boasting. It does make me a superhero, I guess. Mum calls me Wonder Woman. Most women are anyway, particularly this generation, this era. Mum herself is. We have a career, we cook, we clean, we own a property/car, we run, we swim, we yum cha, we breed, we educate, we pay the bills, etc. I cook almost every other day after work, I clean the toilet while I bathe, I study unrelated subjects (read: mathematics) to climb the career-ladder, yet I go running every other evening. I teach swimming in the evening, but not before I make sure my car gets a wash, or I teach swimming, then off I go with my make-up on and dainty dress to a fancy dinner party. I pick up some novels to read and finish it within a week, etc. etc. etc. Now, I do think Galileo got it wrong: The earth revolves around me.
![]() |
Me ...probably. But with a smaller cuppa.
As for "me" time, you would definitely think I am the sporty type - putting "me" time on runs/swims. But nah...you are wrong. I am quite a couch potato, sitting watching How I Met Your Mother or The Kardashians or Criminal Minds...and right now, the Olympics. I turn on my laptop in front of the TV screen, essay a few reports while sobbing on Mobbed or cheering for Uchimura Kohei on pommel horse or Park Tae Hwan on his freestyle heats, and while Draw-ing Something on my phone (**yes, hate me for still playing that game).
![]() |
My Idol spitting water - OK. My swim students spit in the pool, I scold jia-lat.
Yes, I am Wonder Woman, but I am still human. Like many superheros on TV, I err, I love, I hate, I have feelings. Sometimes I don't care enough. Honestly I have one very bad trait: I get jaded with things very fast. Many instances have shown me what I can really be: when I over-indulge in something I loved so a lot, I can suddenly go all cold about it. For no reason. I will hate doing it altogether and I have no qualms quitting it. Doesn't happen all the time, but it happened with Aikido. It happened with Entomology. It happened with Swimming. So I do not go over-board with my indulgences cause I could get jaded. Every day, I pray I don't get jaded with running. So, I try not to over-do and out-run myself on marathons or other races.
I dedicate my 'me' time to my new Samsung Galaxy S3. A blessing-in-disguised, I supposed, that my first smartphone got pickpocketed whilst browsing some recipe books. Stupid, I call myself, for not being vigilant of two male foreigners browsing on recipe books(!!!) near me. Yes, I have a world-view of thinking guys lately have great passion in being chefs themselves (think: Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ram), I never would have thought they were thiefs. Nevertheless, once I realised it's missing, I instantly got a new Samsung. Now I am so addicted to my super-fast, super-slick S3. Yummmy!!!!
I got two scuba diving trips coming up this August and October - Phuket and Sipadan. See, I am full of stuff despite being sooo freaking busy. Mum said she hates me being involved in so many 'rubbish'. Hey!!!

(I think I bought this place only because of the pool).
I also have to study to climb the f**king career ladder. Sh*t! I thought I don't have to ever study again since I've gotten my doctorate. But nope. Here it comes again! And worse: it's all new subjects, unrelated to what I graduated in (read: studying insects). I have to learn physics and engineering and .....errr...part of it: MATHS. I hate maths, like a lot. I guess learning is part of life and it never ends (but studying is not). Warning friends: if I do get cranky, please forgive me: it's because of my studying = bad grades = no naik pangkat = no naik gaji = cranky!!!

You will still see me in some coffee chains on weekends especially. This is one habit that ......I can never get jaded. Never.

Spot the differences: 1st and 2nd Full Marathons
Last Sunday's Standard Chartered KL Marathon was my #2 full marathon assignment.
My #1st was, of course, the most memorable one of all - the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore in Dec 2011. My 1st marathon finish was one fill with emotion; I was angry at myself throughout the race; I was teary when I saw finish line and sobbing when I reached it. What made it possible was my marathon partner - a seasoned marathoner, Kingy, a true sifu and friend who was motivating (read: bluffing) me throughout the race. Was prepared for the marathon physically, but not mentally. Well, let's just say, I wasn't prepared physically too in terms of ample training (I did some training, but just 21 km LSD), and I bet nobody's legs were ever prepared for the dreaded ECP's 10km concrete pavements. ECP did take a toll on my feet until they gave way at the 30km mark. I remembered taking 4 powergels, drank like a gallon of water, eat some gel stuff, having a stomachache, farting like crazy (my digestion was slowing down, as blood all went to pump the heart), and I think I rubbed a kilogram of Deep-heat into my 'jelly' legs. At the end, I managed my first full marathon in 7:00hrs flat, walking the last 10km that took 3hrs.
Thinking about my first marathon is like thinking about your first time taking you first SPM paper - the BM paper. It's your first day into the exam. You cannot comprehend what is going on with you, your mind is soo fixed in the examination mode, you tend to scribble out rubbish on the karangan part. All you wanted is an A1. You just give it your ALL. Halfway through all your remaining 8 papers in SPM, you kinda get it (read: your subsequent marathons). There seem to be less panic. You think: "I can't get out of this sh*t now, but I can only do my best. Stay calm". At the end of all the papers (I remember it was Biology paper), you cry-out-loud cause you made it through 2 weeks of hell, and screamed "Merdeka!". You are eventually judged by your SPM results, but in a marathon, no one judges you by your results are (unless your running are kiasu). That's the best part of running!
You suffered like hell, but for some reason, you yearn for more even during your painful recovery. It's like you wanna prove to Death he can't kill you. Or dare Death to chase you. Thrill.
Secret training:
So yes, my 2nd full marathon attempt: I was initially 'misled' by Daryl that I have to beat 6:00hrs to get the finishers tee. :p I am like "What??!" How am I going to beat my first timing by 1 freaking hour? Despite the myth of seeing me not in training (training does not equate LSDs only), I did a lot more (secret) training for my 2nd marathon - I went to gym a lot to do strength training, lifting weights to strengthen both my thighs and calfs muscles. I did push-ups and pumping like 15X6 sets each time I go to the gym (while working at UTP), and I run in burst of fastpace for 1 min for every 5 min run for a total of 45 minutes.
My secret training, which many runners did not notice, took place at Bukit Jalil park, around my housing area (I went up at 300m the inclination at least 10 times making it 3km of hill training), and of course Bukit Aman's Double hill & LSD. I needed the training, because I've suffered much previously and didn't wanna repeat history for my next full marathon.
The same (they are both by Standard Chartered, of course):
1. 90% flat route in both KL and Singapore marathons.
3. A lot of water, sponges, food, Deep-heat sprays by volunteers. Volunteers are friendly and helpful.
4. Weather was cooling in the morning, sunny-hot after 8.30am.
5. I suffered pain on the right leg at S'pore, but left leg at KL.
6. Loyalty: Me and my baby-blue cap.
The difference:
1. Lesser marathon participants in KL, therefore, so much space and it was a breeze to run in KL. So much less crowd. Good!
2. No concrete pavements in KL (read: I hate ECP!) that badly impacts any runner's feet.
3. Lacks the mad external supports/drums in KL. Why was it soo quiet at Jln P. Ramlee area; last year had more cheerleaders. Nobody wan this year? Singapore - damn hebat with their cheerleaders.
4. Cheaper to run in KL, soooooooooo much cheaper y'all!
5. I did not cry to the finish line in KL. I was all smiles this time.
What's the real difference in this 2nd marathon? Fong and I strategised to stop at every water station, to walk 100 m, before starting again. We did that and completed the race <6:00 hours mark: in 5hr47min. All because we wanted to get the finisher's tee, really! Have to thank Fong for being was a good motivator <3 <3. Unexpectedly, there was zero pain at 30km mark this time! (maybe just tired).

My mum thought I won 2nd place in the full marathon for having a silver finisher's medal.

The Laughing Disease
I've known Russell Peters from my younger brother 4 years back when he showed me through YouTube several gigs Russell put on. His quote "Be a Man, do the right thing", "Somebody's gonna hurt real bad", etc..and his unrelentless gigs on race, religion, and sex. Mind you, topics like sex, religion, and politics can never escape from LOLs. Naturally (and unsuprisingly), these topics provide us the best LOLs!!
Just to let you know, I have been a big fan of stand-up comedy for a very long time. It started with my first ever meeting with drag queen Kumar when he/she performed at a bash in the outdoor Auditorium at NUS. That was way back in Year 2002! I remembered good friends Jonie and Kingy were all laughing our brains out of Kumar's "disturbing" jokes and some topics we can relate to - Malaysian political scene, Malaysia vs. Singapore jokes, etc. At that time, I thought if there were people such as Kumar in my country, he/she will be thrown into Kamunting jail. Suprisingly (at that time), Malaysia has had its own comedy scene, but was unpublicised and only has a hands-full of regular fans. Anyway, Malaysia's comedy scene has progressed much since. Malaysians has learnt fast in accepting and LOL at vulgarities, sexual-related jokes and jokes on own political jokers i.e. ministers, government culture, because in comedy - you can never escape from these topics. The more 'controversial' the joke, the funnier it is! Many Malaysians are very mature and not sensitive with these racial jokes; it is our fear of the ISA that repels us from confronting the realities and our cultural differences. All the races has embraced our differences - be it Malay, Chinese, Indian, etc. and laughing at each other's cultural/racial differences (err...I've seen many bumis in Zouk laughing their brains out on Comedy Thursday). It has never happened before, but I supposed some fanatics, fundamentalist may be unhappy - I dare not comment further.
I have attended quite many stand up comedy night just for fun! In fact, I have lost count: Comedy Night Thursday (at Velvet, Zouk) allows for new upcoming and first-timers an avenue perform, mixed with seasoned comedians such as the MACC trios. Here is one of the crazy ones from year 2010 which I blogged about: http://cchivy.blogspot.com/2010/01/comedy-night-thursday-7-jan-2010.html; http://cchivy.blogspot.com/2010/02/couple-of-subscribers-to-my-blog-have.html
I twice paid for Kings and Queens of Comedy (2010 and 2011), which in 2010, the presenter was my first love: Kumar!
I got myself the most expensive tickets to Russell Peters - for two - and the show was expectedly LMAO ROFTL. We came back with a medical condition known as "cheekbone-pain" which is one of those disease you love to have. I thought maybe I have higher cheekbones after LMAO at Russell Peter's, no?
No photos were allowed, not even chamwhoring is allowed. Damn strict. But we escaped with some:
I had a hard time getting the tickets online. Initially, it was a one-night show, then it became two-nights. All because complaints were made because the media or Datuk-Datuk, orVIP VIP bought 500 seats(I guess) even before the online tickets were opened for sale (9.00am). 'Outsiders' like me when we get into the website at 9.00am sharp, already more than 70% of the seats were taken already (impossible!!). Appalled by such stunt, I guess the organizers extended it to two days for unhappy 'outsiders' like us who are unable to obtain tix directly online/walk-ins. Anyways, with some credit card transaction problems and what not, I managed to obtain my tics. But already, I wasn't happy with the whole hassle of getting it.
Nevertheless, the show was awesome and realised my 'disease' was contagiously dangerous (read: Fong). The disease which I did not seek treatment since 2002.

My many Firsts
There are many firsts in Sarawak.
1. First time travelling all alone just for work.
Usually I am with my entourage of make up artist ....and....creative designer......Okay, Okay, usually whilst work-travelling, I am with at least a colleague who would give me much comfort in a foreign land. But this time it's entirely different. Pretty much given the freedom to independently run my 'show'.
Just to let everyone know (and am proud of it), my room+apartment suite in Miri is bigger than my own Puchong apartment!!! SUPER huge! What a waste staying alone. Next trip, I will be bringing my own "entourage". Mum??
2. First time supervising a huge project on my own.
All I had to do was to courage-up and do what MAN does at sea. When I said MAN, it's a 99.9% MAN's world out there. I am probably the only lady on board every day, and man after man comes by to tease you. It's a pleasant kinda 'tease': saying how small or cute I am in big construction boots, if I need a place to rest, they offer me theirs; many offered to bring my bags, etc...When you're in a man's world, a lady is the luckiest babe in the world!
I am the Queen of the World!
3. First time going offshore platforms...and what more, 2 weeks!
I am a lady who works in a laboratory all the time and heard of the 'wonders' of how oil is being drilled and produced offshore, but I was petrified when I got here. It's harsh. One of the harshest conditions I've ever been (besides Bangkok's Chatuchak market :P). Nevertheless, the view is picture perfect and I've got this few shots with my new Canon. Of course, the next time I wanna go with a helicopter. It should be way better and faster than a boat.
Going offshore takes a toll on your body. The environment is harsh, plus the daily boat trips that you make (waking up at 4.30am and only get home by 9:00pm) gets you so tired, you just wanna sleep the night off. If this is someone's life, I do not want to be that 'someone'. It's not even life. I'm going to use this as a one (or two) off experience.
4. First time tasting the recommended Kolo Mee.
Nothing to shout about; nothing special. Plain whitish noodle with soya sauce. So, that's all for my food review. The End.
5. And of course, First time setting foot in the massive state of Sarawak.
Let's just say I've been to EVERY state in the whole of Malaysia (yes, even Perlis when I was working for BERNAS to check on some paddy fields and neighbour Brunei for a short stay), but never before til now that I've stepped foot in the vast state of Sarawak. I thought I may visit Kuching for my first trip to Sarawak, but turned out to be Miri instead. Gladly, many claimed Miri is more 'happening' as it has more entertainment value (hush hush: karaoke, china-dolls, pubs, disco, seafood, etc.) in comparison to Kuching.
If you want to make a comparison, I should say Miri is like Kuantan. But unlike our Pahang sister, Miri started off from nothing to a rich, buzzling city because of...yup, you've guessed it: oil. The Grand Old Lady was where the first oil was produced, and though it's no longer producing and being made a museum, the city and population is still sustained by the industry. Hotels are mostly made up of oil&gas staff working here, while the outskirts have fishermen, boat-makers, boats for rent, etc...Tourism is a thriving industry here. As I've mentioned before, the vast "entertainment value" and freedom it offers attracts people from nearby Brunei and other quieter cities (e.g. Bintulu) especially in the weekends.
I will be back to Miri for sure to follow up on the project. Then it will be a different blogpost the next round as it will include more reviews of Sarawak food which would interest more readers, I guess. Nearby Niah Caves and Taman Negara shall be my next destination too if I were to return, which sadly did not fit into my tight itinerary during this trip.
Ivy-out!

I am the Queen of the World!
But not quite a queen yet...
...because the job is not easy and it's literally dirty. Of course I get to 'cheat' a little in my job and 'bluff' tired, and MAN will come help me. But naturally, I did everything I was supposed to do myself, all by myself. I need to learn too how to do things hands on and do not like to be identified as a pure laboratory geek. But no doubt it's a harsh, harsh, harsh environment out there and I ain't kidding. The job requires both brains and brawn. More of the latter:
i. It's hot and sunny and humid out at sea.
ii. I am in coveralls, which makes me sweat like a pig.
iii. The sea may not be as calm as you think. Sometimes, the boat rocks really hard and you go nausea. Thank God I have some boat diving experiences, in which my body is quite accustomed to.
iv. The job is about oil crude that comes splashing out from some well-head. Soooo oilly!! My face, my hands, my neck...sooo oilllyyyyy!!! I spot new pimples on my face daily.
v. And you always ask: "What smell is that?"
vi. "You mean I just pee/poop through this HOLE and you can see my sh*t and poop falling into the sea?! 'Nice'" I'd rather kap-see some times.
My gloves. Sooo oilyyy!! *gellliii*
I am barred from revealing this but can't help it: We were bored to death, so we went fishing and had a great catch. A convenient hobby heh? (This photo is not photoshopped)

I should request for a heli ride next time. Faster, but is it safer(?)
At night, the lights are extraordinarily brilliant: I am like "WOOOOOaaaaAAHHH" again.
By the time I arrive at the Wharf, it's already sun set.

Ivy-out!

The Lazy Diver
Diving is one of those things that tempt me like crazy. My sheer stubbornness to go diving betrays my own need for a moderate lifestyle. But why do I need to change my exciting life (wow!) to a so-called "moderate life" (blehh!), when I can de-stress, relax, and build relationship with my colleagues and bosses in a dainty secluded island, right? (ok, not what you think). Sometimes I bitch-slap myself to ask if I really need to go for a dive trip cause diving is a very expensive sport (and dangerous), but I tell myself that if I keep thinking about this I will NEVER go for one. So believe it, I went for Lang Tengah w/o much deliberation and hey...did not regret it. :)
We started our journey approx. 10.30 pm from Karak in a convoy of 4 vehicles. I get the to sit the super-cool Pajero, built for invading jungle trails which belongs to an ex-colleague. This ex-colleague is now doing full time leisure-, teaching- and commercial diving. Yup, the guy with the white hoodie printed 'DIVE', that's him. He's also into 4WD challenges, which make him one of the most adventurous guy and well-prepared-for-any-dive-trip I've ever met.
Luggage bag is a no-no in dive trips - cause it doesn't make you look like a diver, and I am like "WTF!?"
From Maran jetty, we took the ferry to Redang-Lang resort. Once we had lunch, the evening itself, I went for a shore dive. After the dive, I relaxed upon the beautiful sunset and have short chat with my colleagues. Reading a book (Girl Who Played with Fire series), I gazed far toward the horizon, to catch blinks blinks of ray seeping into the sea (hehe, I suck at descriptive essays) :P

Preparing for one of our dives
I did 7 dives in total for this trip. There's nothing to shout about in all dives - no weird creatures, did not spot any turtles. Maybe because I've seen sooo many odd creatures in my previous dives in Bali, Indonesia (manta rays, pipe fishes, cleaner shrimp and lobsters) and Perhentian (turtles, nudi branches, etc.) that the sea creatures in Lang Tengah look quite hmmphh 'normal'. Not that I am complaining, but I think I've seen way too many Nemos and their anemones, even trigger fishes to say that Lang Tengah is different.
Actually, it's not what you see in those dive spots which makes you go crazy-happy, but the relaxation and the sense of belonging and mindfulness in this earth - our planet which is under-explored, mysterious and awesome! I applaud James Cameron and his submarine (and his desire to explore and learn) going down to the deepest trench in this earth - The Mariana Trench. As a scientist myself, I love to understand and document some rare species, but that might come after I makan-gaji more first and 'collect' enough money to feed my curiosity, :P (well, let's see....I am not earning like a hollywood superstar)

Air hostess pose. Everyone hates my luggage bag, as it doesn't epitomize a diver. WTF
There's no future dive trips being planned yet. But each time you return from one, you hope for the next. Addiction. Thank God money (and time) is the limiting factor, if not, I might go for one every 6 months. :P Well, fingers crossed, I thought of going for a dive trip to Thailand...and maybe log in 2-3 dives with Fong, can? can?

Double Hill
I've gotten my pre-valentine treat at Cameron Highlands, a place where flowers bloom and strawberry business thrive. 'Strawberry business' in my dictionary is not limited to strawberries growing in soil, but it also refers to merchandises that LOOK like strawberries, e.g. strawberry-shaped pillows, magnets, pencils that has strawberry prints, strawberry fondue, strawberry clothings, tea-infused strawberries, etc... Travesty! Gosh, they are everywhere in the whole of Camerons. Urrrgghhh....!
Don't let this 'beautiful' fruit trick you
I hate strawberries and I am not kidding. The Malaysian breeds are rarely sweet, in fact they are super sour. This fruit is only beautiful skin-deep. Before you know it, they are grown with white-fluffy fungus, Rhizopus nigricans, with post-harvest 'leak' (I learnt this in my Ph.D. years of fungal res.). The only piece of strawberries I can consume are processed strawberries - in the form of jams and ice-cream. Nahhh, not even whip-cream on strawberry can change my mind abt this fruit.
What made my impression of strawberries worse - the hideous English:
What made my impression of strawberries worse - the hideous English:
Haiyoor...England so worse!
The main objective (omg, too much of scientific research makes me so skema lately) of this trip was to hike up two hills (thus, Double hill) where lies the most amazing stretches of tea plantation: Sg. Palas BOH tea plantation and HABU tea plantation. The former is at Brinchang, while the latter is after Ringlet. And of course, to spend time with Fong away from the buzzling city :). If you didn't know, I have been very stressful at work lately. I need some kinda time-out.
Flowers, yes, flowers are more my type
These are definitely not lavender, but they are so pretty!
Bharat tea plantation, off-Brinchang.
After
checking in to Equatorial, we headed to Tanah Rata for lunch. During my Ph.D.
years, I spent 5 days living in Tanah Rata to study the pesticide
levels of produces here, hence I thought I was pretty familiar of Tanah Rata. But
that was 2007. There wasn't Starbucks then; I was surprised to see the coffee
outlet being out-of-place in a tea-dominant area and teh tarik stalls! Hah, I spot
only kwai lows and backpackers patronizing Starbucks at that time...See!
I do not know, but I feel that this Starbucks is kinda out-of-place
Wasting
no time, we head to Lord's Cafe to filled up our stomachs before the hike. Back then, this place was called T-cafe. infamously known for their classic scones & jam and creamy (strawberry?!) cakes. Pies here is a must-try too. I ordered scones, while Fong shared his strawberry mousse cake with me. It was disappointing to know that they do not serve main entrees anymore here. Wonder why.
Lord's cafe lived up to its name as it does have a Christian feel in here. Loads of posters and encouraging verses from the Bible hung on the four walls of the cafe. Books/magazines are ample, contributed by backpackers stopping for a meal.
At Lord's cafe
Finished scones.
After that quick brunch, we make the foothill of Sg. Palas BOH plantation,
Brinchang. The primary reason we don't want to drive up was because I've
experience a literal heart attack the last time I came up here with my Kelisa
with my ex-classmates. Was driving up to Sg. Palas with my Kelisa, and yet, I was
pressured to passed those huge busses and other vehicles coming down. The gap
between me and the edge of the ridge were mere inches!! I remembered I was
being honked and honked and honked and was compelled to brave through the horrendous
traffic flow. And that was with a tiny
weany Kelisa we're talking
about; imagine going up with a Honda City! Historically I doubt there were any
car that fell over the edge before, but it takes a heart of a lion to get up
there. I was a squishy insect that time.
Nevertheless, a hike is lots better cause:
1. It's mere 2 km
2. It's cooling!
3. The view was fantastic
4. We both love exercising, Fong's from Menglembu. A tar-road
hike-up = Kledang hill.
This
is why we didn't want to drive up to Sg. Palas. Traffic in standstill for
a moment. The road up/down fits 1 car and 1 car only. Don't fall off the
edge!

Rest for a while
Check point no.1 - white roses decorating the guard post
He doesn't mind a pose. Plantation worker harvesting tea
Ethical spraying: Good agricultural practices by BOH. FYI, you'll need 7 days after spraying pesticides before you harvest your produce.
An old smoke house bellowing ...well, smoke. Well, it's a rare sight (my first), cause in Malaysia you don't see fireplaces working on a sunny afternoon!
Arriving at destination. Sg Palas BOH plantation
A short break and hydrate before we hike down before night comes.
When you see pool, you play pool.
At Habu tea house.
Habu plantation as backdrop.
Was wondering what the white spots were. Zooming in showed hardworking plantation workers doing their tea-thing. Harvesting?
MNS check point 1. This place is filled with tall trees forming a shadowy canopy, giving the divine sunlight a slight penetration.
Huge millipede. There were a pair (but not another was not photographed). Yes, mating.
We arrived at KL in the evening and were blessed to have each other, sharing the same passion. Bought like tonnes of vege and flowers, til today also still cannot finish. As my boss would say: Objectives were met.
